Patient Spotlight: Evelyn Robertson

West Virginian Evelyn Robertson has improved her diabetes symptoms thanks to FamilyCare’s innovative Health and Community Education Department—and the friendly, supportive environment created by FamilyCare staff.

Where are you from?

Hurricane.

How do you spend your day?

I’m retired, but I spend my personal time going to church and helping out with close loved ones who are in need of support.

Why did you initially choose FamilyCare?

I have been with FamilyCare for years, seeing physicians at the Teays Valley location. I’m currently seeing Dr. Webb as my family doctor. She encourages me with my blood sugar level, which has improved through FamilyCare’s FARMacy classes, which taught me to eat better. My blood sugar level has gone from a 7.2 to a 6.6.

What do you value most about your experience with FamilyCare?

My dietitian Angel Cunningham. She is very encouraging. She’s honest with you, forthcoming, and tries to help find what you’re doing wrong without discouraging you in any way.

What advice would you give to new patients interested in the nutrition program*?

I tell everyone I meet about it. Because from the time I started in January of 2023, I have lost 35 pounds. So, people notice my weight loss, and I tell them that it is in my eating and diet. The little changes that I learned in the lessons we have through FamilyCare just started making the weight come off.

What do you think makes FamilyCare’s services unique?

Everyone you meet is very friendly and cares about you. I’m on a first name basis with all the staff members now, and I even say “hey” when we bump into each other in the community. FamilyCare’s staff will always get you to someone who will help you and put you on the right track.

*The nutrition program that Evelyn participated in is part of HACE.
