Health Tips: Back to School

Is your family settling back into a school year routine? As kids return to their classrooms and the colder weather months approach, here are some tips to help prevent illness and set your child up for success:

Immunizations and wellness exams: Make sure your child is up to date on their immunizations and wellness exams. Staying up to date on immunizations can help protect from illnesses.

Backpack safety: It’s important that your child’s backpack isn’t too heavy (more than 10-20% of their body weight). Backpacks that are too heavy can cause neck, back, and shoulder pain.

Sleep: Getting enough sleep is crucial for your child to be successful in school. Stick to a regular bedtime routine and turn off electronic devices 1-2 hours before bedtime.

Handwashing: Encourage your child to wash their hands at school and practice good hand washing together—wet your hands, lather with soap, rub for 20 seconds, rinse, and dry.

Nutrition: Start your child’s school day with a nutritious breakfast. This will help them concentrate better and have the energy to succeed in and out of the classroom.

Sports: During practices and games, make sure your child takes breaks to lessen the chance of injury and prevent heat illness. Drinking plenty of water is also essential!

Homework and study habits: Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework. Children benefit from having a consistent workspace in the home that is quiet and free from distractions.
